Travelling  in Austria by car?

You can have your  local number customized to your car plate.  You choose the number the same as the number of your car! Contact us .

Here are some tips for drivers

In Austria the alphanumeric format for registration plates is "XX-(provincial emblem)-number-letter(s)" or "XX-(provincial emblem)-personalised lettering-number";

  • XX - one or two letters denoting the administrative district where the registered keeper resides. Provincial capitals have one letter, all other districts have two letters.
  • province - heraldic emblem of the Federal province the district belongs to; diplomatic vehicles have a dash instead (–)
  • the numbers/letters are issued in ascending order

Until the year 2000 the plates were issued by the district administrations, who used a variety of lettering schemes, e.g. one digit and three letters (e.g. FK 1 ABC in the Feldkirch district), two digits and two letters (e.g. WL 12 AB in the Wels district).

Since 2000 the vehicle registration have been carried out by car insurance companies on behalf of the government. The branch offices of these companies issue the plates, which show three digits and two letters (eg XX 123 AB) in each district.
Cars in Vienna spot up to 5 digit numbers + 1 letter (eg W 12345 A) or 4 digit numbers + 2 letters (eg W 1234 AB)

There are standardized abbreviations for special types of cars
RD - Rettungsdienst (ambulance vehicles)
BE - Bestattung (funeral services)
TX - Taxi (taxis)
LO - Linienomnibus (public service busses)
GT - Gütertransport (vehicles transporting goods)
Army, diplomats, police etc. just have a number (starting with 1, incrementing)

If you are going to immigrate to Australia, here are some tips for you:

Initial Application
If you would like to obtain a first residence title applications it should be made from abroad prior to entry into Austria.  One should apply personally at the Austrian representation agency in charge (such as embassies, general consulates, but not honorary consulates or cultural institutes) of the country where he/she lives.  In principle it is not possible to obtain a residence title if you have entered the country with a visa category C (short-term stay or travel visa).

Residence Permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung)

Residence permit is given for a certain purpose and will not be extended after the purpose is fulfilled. Some kinds of "Aufenthaltsbewilligungen" entitle to bring also spouses and children under 18 years, some do not. All kinds of residence permits are not limited by quota. These kinds of residence permits are issued for working purposes (to those who have work permit).
(For example, to those who is working in international companies).

Settlement Permit (Niederlassungsbewilligung)

Third-country nationals (except for EU and EEA citizens) wishing to live in Austria permanently require a settlement permit.
People who want to immigrate because they want to work in Austria have to be key personnel ("Schlüsselkräfte"). All kinds of first applications for a Settlement Permit are limited by quota.

There are quota for:

  • Key personnel
  • For people who want to join parents or spouses who are already living and working in Austria with a Niederlassungsbewilligung. There is a limit of age: spouses have to be at least 18 years old, children have to be unmarried and must be under 18 years old.
  • For people who want to immigrate but do not intend to work
